Recipe Scaler
Scale ingredient quantities to a new number of serves.
A quantity at the start of a line is scaled. Fractions such as 1/2 or 1 1/2 are read.
3 cups flour 0.75 tsp salt 2.25 tbsp oil
Worked example
A recipe for 4, scaled to 6, multiplies each leading quantity by 1.5. 2 cups of flour becomes 3, 1/2 tsp of salt becomes 0.75, and 1 1/2 tbsp of oil becomes 2.25.

- Which numbers are scaled?
- A quantity at the start of a line. A number later in the sentence is left alone.
- Are fractions understood?
- Yes. 1/2 and mixed numbers such as 1 1/2 are read, then written back as a decimal.
- What if a line has no quantity?
- It is copied unchanged. “Salt to taste” stays as it is.
