An estimate for the 2026–27 income year, not tax advice. Resident brackets from the ATO: nil to $18,200, then 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, and 45% above that. Medicare levy is a flat 2% here, with no low-income reduction. Offsets, deductions, and GST are not included.
The extra tax and Medicare on $18,000.00 of gig income is about $5,760.00. Combined tax and levy on $83,000.00 is $17,080.00.

Worked example
A $65,000 wage plus $18,000 of freelance income. Tax is worked on $83,000, then the tax on $65,000 is subtracted, so the difference is the extra tax on the gig. Medicare is a flat 2% in both totals.
